Nonprofit Tax Basics

Here’s a breakdown of the IRS Form 990:

  1. All nonprofits, except for churches or government institutions, must file Form 990 by May 15 each year. You can download this form and instructions at www.irs.gov.
  2. Depending on your organization’s expenses and earnings, you will either file the Form 990, the 990N, or the 990EZ.
  3. Failure to do so will result in the revocation of your nonprofit, tax-exempt status.
